The Departments of Medical Microbiology and Internal Medicine in partnership with Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) Infection and Immunology Research Program (MUII) have established a modern Immunology laboratory at Makerere University College of Health Sciences. The laboratory fully equipped with trained staff, students and modern equipment. Multiple external quality control/quality assurance programs can now be done in the laboratory.
Clinical diagnostic procedures routinely done in the lab include testing for HIV, Hepatitis B, Herpes Simplex 2, syphilis, Pregnancy and many others.
Other advanced techniques (usually done for Research purposes) include PBMC isolation and cryopreservation, cell culture, and interferon gamma release assays (IGRA) among others.
The MUII Laboratory also provides quality services to other projects.
These projects include;
- The role of Natural killer cells in pre-elampsia in an African population: a genetic study of killer immmunoglobin-like receptors and the HLA-C polymorphisms.
- Parallel comparison of Tenofovir and Emtricitabine/tenofovir pre-explosive prophylaxis to prevent HIV-1 acquisition within HIV-1 Discordant couples.
- Comparison of Immunity Induced by Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) given at birth and 6 weeks of age.
This is the latest development on the menu of laboratories in the department.
The immunology laboratory has been established to train and research on infection immunology in the tropics.
The lab begun as a simple serological facility housed in the molecular biology laboratory, where it has been offering diagnostics on HIV, Hepatitis B, Herpes Simplex 2, syphilis, and tumors.
Recently, the Departments of Medical Microbiology and Internal Medicine in partnership with the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and the EDCTP established a state of the art immunology laboratory that is being equipped with modern facilities to conduct advanced immunological studies on infectious diseases, mainly TB, HIV/AIDS and Malaria.
As of today, the Laboratory is growing at an alarming rate and is already equipped with bio safety cabinets, ELIZA instruments, Fridges and Freezers. More equipment such as flow cytometers have been ordered and will arrive soon.
On the training side, 4 PhD students have begun their projects at the laboratory.
In addition MUII Laboratory trains students in a large range of immunological research areas. The lab has a team of four well trained staff led by a laboratory Manager and a laboratory Director.
The MUII Lab is well equipped with modern equipment. Currently there are primary and back up equipment for micro-centrifuges, routine centrifuges, EIA washer & readers, precision pipettes, incubators (ordinary and CO2 types), autoclave, refrigerators, Freezers, biohazard flow hoods, fume extract hood, water baths, heat blocks, vortex machines, microscope, Liquid N2 emergency storage tanks, and shakers.
Each study is assigned a study number and each patient sample a unique lab number. Tracking results and storage are followed through a Lab computer system and Freezer works. All activities are done in adherence to current SOPs and GCLP standards.
Quality management QC/QA/QI
The quality assurance program covers the pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical phases. This is through standard procedures like sample rejection/acceptance, Turn Around Time, IQCs based on manufacturers recommendations, EQA proficiency programs, Blind/Split sample testing etc.
